Dark Phoenix Fails to Soar During its Opening Weekend
The 'Fox-Men' Franchise Goes out with a Whimper
'Dark Phoenix', the final film in the Fox run of 'X-Men' movies that began in 2000, delivered the lowest opening weekend of the franchise hauling in $33m at the US box office and $107m internationally for a worldwide debut of $140m.
Domestic Box Office (est.) 7 to 9 June:
1. The Secret Life of Pets 2 $47.1m
2. Dark Phoenix $33m
3. Aladdin (2019) $24.5m
4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters $15.5m
5. Rocketman $14m
Disney's release of Fox's 'Dark Phoenix', the finale to this iteration of the Marvel characters pulled in $33m during its US debut, the lowest debut of any film in the franchise and ended up in second place for the weekend. By comparison, 2016's 'X-Men: Apocalypse', coming off the back of the success of 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' ($90.82m debut), opened to $65.7m. Unadjusted for inflation, the first swing at the 'Dark Phoenix Saga', 'X-Men: The Last Stand', debuted to $102.7m in 2006.
With Hugh Jackman already giving 'Wolverine' the perfect send-off with 'Logan', no 'Deadpool' and a recycled story (a great story but too soon for a re-do) 'Dark Phoenix' was always going to struggle over the weekend especially when the reviews from both critics and audiences started to come in. Opening day audiences gave the film a B- CinemaScore, down from the A- 'X-Men: Apocalypse' received. Rotten Tomatoes has the film sitting on a 23% critic score and 64% audience rating. The audience rating of 64% seems about right from what we've seen over the weekend, with many people giving it about around 4-6/10... roughly.
As for the film's long-term hopes, current estimates from analysts suggest Simon Kinberg's second stab (Kinberg was a screenwriter for 'X-Men: The Last Stand') will finish its US theatrical run with a gross around the $82.5m mark, less than the $85m 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (2009) grossed in its opening weekend.
